our time  ~  your piece of mind!

                                                                                           2005

Barbuda Physicians Past, Present and Future,

The Barbuda Medical Program is now associated with the West Virginia School of Medicine International Medical

Program which sends staff, residents and medical students to Barbuda.  If you are interested in returning to

Barbuda or visiting it for the first time, you have reached the right person.   My duties regarding the Barbuda

    Medical Program are:

  • coordinate the physician schedule from the U.S.
  • make recommendations as to needs and changes in the Barbuda Medical Program (BMP)
  • maintain communications.

We have instituted a monthly report form to be filled out before you leave Barbuda to communicate to me as well as the following month’s physician as to needs for supplies, drugs, and equipment that will need to be taken down by the following month’s physician. Also, any problem situations that need to be changed or corrected. You will be given a copy of a number of items so you will be aware of what is expected of the physician and what is expected of the hospital and Barbuda Council during your stay.

All three of the hotels are in business for their season of November through April. The hospital and the doctor’s house are as usual.

As before you will have:

  • A free furnished house for your stay.

  • Maid service 5 days a week.

  • A truck with free gas and oil.

  • The most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. The future King of England has used them twice at K-Club.

  • All the fish, lobster and conch that you care to eat.

  • Round trip air fare to Barbuda (physicians only staying the full month).

  • Cable T V

For the above you will have to:

  • Work from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. daily Monday through Friday except for holidays and there are a number of those.

  • Be on call every other day while on the island for emergencies. (the nurses are quite good and take care of most of the problems and will only call you for something they cannot handle). The Island now has a full time General Practice Physician with whom you trade call (he does take a vacation once a year).

  • We have a $100.00 application, processing fee to cover some of the costs that will be incurred with the increase in communications (fax, phone, mail and shipping supplies.). The $100.00 is not a lot for the wonderful vacation that you will have and 1200/year will go a long way to help cover the cost of administering, communicating and sending supplies for the Barbuda Medical Program.

Over the years many physicians have donated fans, microwaves, kitchen equipment, etc. which makes our stay much more pleasant and agree that seeing patients (5 - l5 a morning) is helpful to keep from getting bored with a vacation that most people can only dream about.

Thanks very much for being a part of the Barbuda Medical Program. I think you will enjoy the time you spend in Barbuda.

Sincerely,
John L. Fullmer, M.D.

P.S. If you might be available on short notice in case someone has an emergency and cannot go to Barbuda, please call, write or e-mail me. This would be very helpful.
